In this special concert one of Australia’s leading Indian musicians, tabla player Bobby Singh, joins Sandy Evans, Brett Hirst and special guest drummer Greg Sheehan in a thrilling musical dialogue.

Their soulful melodies, breathtaking improvisations, hypnotic grooves and stunning percussion solos celebrate the fusion of jazz and Indian music in a unique and sublime way. They have played to rave reviews at the Bellingen Jazz Festival, OzAsia Festival, Parramasala Festival, Live At The Village, SIMA, Camelot and Sunday Live for the ABC.

This concert will feature excerpts from their acclaimed CD Kapture (RF100), a tribute to Ahmed Kathrada a South African anti-apartheid activist who was imprisoned with Nelson Mandela for 26 years. ‘Kapture’ is the 100th release in the catalogue the legendary Sydney jazz label Rufus Records. The music for Kapture was created in collaboration with dancer Liz Lea.

Bobby Singh (tabla) is one of the most experienced tabla players in Australia, and highly respected in Australia’s world music scene. Under the guidance of Aneesh Pradhan he was nurtured into a mature, internationally renowned tabla virtuoso. He performs regularly at Australian and international festivals including Womadelaide, Woodford Folk Festival, Sydney Festival, World Fair Bonn, Perth International Arts Festival and Singapore Arts Festival. SBS made a documentary about his musical life ‘Viva, I Belong Everywhere’. An ARIA award winner, he is well known for his work with artists including Circle of Rhythm, Rasa Duende, Jeff Lang, Maru Tarang, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, DHA, The Bird, Adrian McNeil, Djan Djan, Tony Gorman, John Butler Trio, Sandy Evans, Pandit Ashok Roy, Purbayan Chatterjee, Billy Cobham, Joseph Tawardros and Kim Sanders.

Greg Sheehan (drums and percussion) is a very popular and influential Australian Percussionist. As a performer,teacher and recording artist, he is significantly represented in Australian music over the last 46 years. Greg has appeared with such artists as Blackfeather, Goanna, Shane Howard, Kev Carmody, Hothouse Flowers, Donal Lunny and Coolfin, Mark Simmonds Freeboppers, Utungun Percussion, Blue King Brown, Cat Empire, Jeff Lang, The Black Arm Band and Circle Of Rhythm, and at festivals including Singapore Arts,  Womad UK,  Womadelaide, Tedx, Mona Foma, Woodford, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Festivals. He is known for his innovation in fields of Rhythms, Cross Cultural

Sandy Evans (saxophones) is an internationally renowned composer and saxophonist with a passion for improvisation and new music. She has played with and written for some of the most important groups in Australian jazz since the early 1980s and has toured extensively in Australia, Europe, Canada and Asia. She leads the Sandy Evans Trio and Sextet, and co-leads the internationally acclaimed Clarion Fracture Zone and GEST8. She is a member of Mara!, The catholics, the Australian Art Orchestra (AAO), Ten Part Invention, austraLYSIS, Friends of Kim Sanders, Atma Blu, Waratah, Andrew Robson’s Tallis project, Ben Walsh’s Orchestra of the Underground and SNAP. Her composition Testimony’ about the life and music of Charlie Parker with poetry by Yusef Komunyakaa was published in 2013 by Wesleyan University Press.

Sandy has a keen interest in Indian classical music. She collaborates regularly with Sydney-based Indian musicians Sarangan Sriranganathan and Bobby Singh. She has received many awards including an OAM, Bell Award For Australian Jazz Musician of The Year 2003, AIR Award for Best Independent Jazz CD and three ARIA Awards. Sandy is an experienced teacher and inaugurated a Jazz Improvisation Course for Young Women run annually by SIMA. She is a Lecturer in Music at UNSW.

Brett Hirst (bass) is a virtuoso who has performed and recorded with many Australian and international artists including Mike Nock, James Muller, Mark Isaacs, Lior, Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, James Morrison, Sandy Evans, Gary Daley, Phil Slater, Sam Keevers, Scott Tinkler, Paul Cutlan, Andrew Robson, Reuben Derrick, Gerard Masters and Nick McBride. Brett has a Diploma of Jazz Studies from the Christchurch School of Jazz and a Masters Degree in performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
