Event Details

Wassado is a high energy 5 piece African band led by the esteemed Malian guitarist Moussa Diakite.

Moussa Diakite & Wassado play modern Malian music inspired by the rich musical traditions of his West African homeland.

Emerging from the golden era of Malian music in the 1970s & 80s as one of its most influential and respected lead guitarists, Moussa performed with the seminal Super Rail Band de Bamako, the legendary Toumani Diabaté’s Yanga Orchestra and the internationally acclaimed voice of Africa Salif Keita, before migrating to Australia in 1994.

Since that time Moussa has been an influential force in the Australian African music scene. He formed Badema (The brothers) followed by the Afro Jazz and became a feature of the local festival circuit playing at Bellingen, Kiama and the Apollo Bay Festivals as well as performing with Malian diva Oumou Sangare at the Sydney Opera House. Moussa was also a key component in other groups including Keyim Ba and Chosani Afrique.

After an absence of many years Moussa returned to Mali to record his new album Doncomodja which translates as “A gift from god”. Waiting for him in Bamako at the legendary Studio Yeelen were old friends and some of Mali’s finest musicians including; Djelimady Tounkara, Cheick Tidiane Seck, recent Grammy award nominee Bassekou Kouyaté and multi-Grammy award winning kora player, Toumani Diabaté.

Moussa Diakite along with his exciting Sydney based band Wassado will be performing tracks from Doncomodja, fusing traditional Malian styles with blues, jazz, Cuban and Afro-rock, creating an exciting and dynamic mix.
